Performance
Biľak’s surprisingly diverse work goes far beyond graphic design, working with modern dance and scenography. Together with the choreographer Lukáš Timulak, he conceives concepts for new modern dance performances, and worked with companies such as Royal Swedish Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Opéra National de Lyon. Their longstanding collaboration led to the birth of Make Move Think, a foundation for interdisciplinary artistic collaboration, where they now work with the urban designer Luisa Calabrese creating a live performance at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice.
Totality in Parts
, 2018 — In Totality in Parts, created for the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm, Timulak and Biľak explore organisational principles of nature by looking closely at relationships defined both by mathematical algorithms and by seemingly free will. To complement Timulak’s choreography, which examines the inseparability of individual and group behaviour, Biľak created a multi-armed light structure controlled by computers. The circular, six-metre-wide light installation consists of 512 lights arranged along 32 curved arms that open and close like the petals of a sunflower. Each light is controlled individually via a digital multiplex system (DMX) developed by light designer Tom Visser, allowing the sculpture to display a wide variety of static and dynamic patterns.
Dance Writer
, 2009 — Peter Biľak was invited to create a new work for Experimenta Lisbon and the exhibition Quick Quick Slow, curated by Emily King, a survey of the dimension of time in art and design. He proposed Dance Writer, an interactive installation which allowed visitors to type a message on a touch screen and see it rendered by the elegant movement of a dancer. Valentina Scaglia, a former dancer from Netherlands Dance Theatre, performed the alphabet, and Resolume, a live-video-mixing software company based in The Hague, created the Dance Writer software. Taco Zwaanswijk recorded and edited the video.
Hidden Order
, 2018 — We live in a structured word, surrounded by visible and less visible patterns. Historically men endeavoured to understand these patterns in mathematics, biology or chemistry in order to better understand the world we live in. In this latest choreography by Lukas Timulak, patterns and relationships are explored in a work where dance, visual elements and music comes together in a seamless harmony made by the contrast of forms, lights and movement. Timulak turned to his long time collaborator Peter Bilak for the design of the set, and light designer Yutaka Endo to visualise the usually invisible patterns around us.
There & Not There

Eroica
, 2010 — In this work, choreographer Lukáš Timulak explores Beethoven’s landmark Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”. Inspired by the composer’s personal life, especially his Heiligenstadt period, Timulak looks into the life of an enigmantic man. Peter Bilak created a custom lightning structure that adapts to the story of the dance piece.
Body & Language
, 2015 — A full evening dance-piece Body & Language choreographed by Lukáš Timulak and designed by Peter Biľak transforms the stage into a three-dimensional book. Dancers and letters fill the space of the stage and become content of that book.
